Recens Paper #3 Observe

A youth culture magazine, exploring the lifestyles of the modern age teenager.

‘A youth generation that is tired of a society that ruins collective self-confidence with an expectation of perfection that is forced upon them. These youth are part of a generation that will not be limited to gender binaries. They will not accept the obligations of commercialism.’

My contribution consists of two double–page spreads.

Legacy: A Collaborative Archive

Studio 3015 gave me the opportunity to work on a multidisciplinary brief, which included the curation of an exhibition, exhibition design and to develop the identity. I gained valuable experience whilst interning at Studio 3015, working alongside three other colleagues and received constructive feedback from the studio and G.F Smith. After looking at G.F Smith’s history and paper collection (especially Colorplan) one of their most well-known collections—we experimented with how paper can communicate specific feelings and emotions. We produced a vast amount of experimentations to find the ultimate way to convey G.F Smith’s legacy, investigating the movement of paper, It’s tactility and how different paper collections produce distinct messages.

Crossing Borders

Originally initiated to raise awareness of current social and political issues surrounding immigration to foster a richer understanding of cultural perspectives. Crossing Borders involves students and staff from Graphic Arts at Winchester School of Art, England and Industrial Design at Bilgi Üniversitesi, Turkey to participate in the wider questioning of the contexts of crossing borders. Through the use of live streaming technologies, we aim to compare similarities or differences of practice, and encourage the student cohort to participate and connect with these issues.

The outcome is a bilingual display typeface that can be written and read in Turkish and English. It is a modified version of Aktiv Grotesk, originally designed and developed by Dalton Maag.

Legacy is a unique exhibition which showcases the work of BA (Hons) Graphic Arts students at Winchester School of Art alongside the prestigious archive collection of G.F Smith. In this exhibition Year 3 Graphic Arts students investigate the legacy of values and behaviours that have originated from unexpected visual or verbal sources. These visuals and verbal sources include subjects as eclectic as Ratu Udre Udre, Techno Fossils and Aldo Rossi.

Alongside this the G.F Smith archive showcases their own legacy of iconic printed work from renowned designers including Made Thought, SEA Design, Paul Rand, Milton Glaser and Saul Bass. in addition to their archives, on private view night, G.F Smith’s Matt Ford will be available to discuss G.F Smith’s startling range of papers and the benefits of these for graphic design professionals.

A Very Strange Record

A very strange record explores the forgotten legacy of Ratu Udre Udre, a Fijian chief of the 19th century. He holds the world record for “most prolific cannibal”, devouring over 900 people. Whether the story is a folk tale, passed down through the generations of the Fijian villagers—evidence has been left behind, Udre Udre’s personal trophy. He kept a stone for each victim he consumed, which are now positioned alongside his tomb in the Rakiraki District of Fiji. This astonishing record evidently reveals a legacy, whether It’s true or not, a legacy has been left behind in the form of a trophy—or trophies.

I decided to undergo the same procedure that Udre Udre experienced, creating a visual manifestation of his record, in the appearance of an 1008 page publication which showcases his activities.
